Edible Flexi Clay

Flexi Clay is a starch-based specialty paste, developed locally for South African cake decorators.

The clay is used to make beautiful lifelike flowers, dress figurines, make bows, edible lace and even used in silicone moulds.

Flexibility lasts for at least 3 weeks but can be rejuvenated with steam. The clay has a fine texture and workability, providing you with a perfect outcome and extended work time.

A significant advantage of this paste, unlike other flower and gum pastes on the market that become dry and brittle in a few hours, is that it is much easier to use when it comes to wiring and arranging flowers on wedding or celebration cakes.

Cake delivery and setup is easier without the risk of breakage.

This paste is like an edible version of Air-Drying Clay.

Flexi Clay has a subtle flowery undertone and is truly noticeable after the final steaming as the flowers release a gorgeous fragrance.

Flexi Clay is particularly suitable for such flowers as Roses, Gerber daisy, Sunflower, Passionflower, Dahlias and Gardenias that are easily prone to petal breakage due to the shape of the flower and the petal formation. Flexi Clay petal breakage will be a thing of the past due to its unique structural integrity and flexibility.

Hints and Tips

1.      Edible Flexi Clay can be coloured with powder or gels and is a edible Vegan product.

2.      Open the bag by cutting off the top where the notches are and open the seal. I recommend you keep the Edible Flexi Clay in this same bag as it will keep the paste in excellent condition. Remember to always keep the bag sealed when not in use.

3.      No need to refrigerate, but I strongly recommend refrigeration during heat waves.

4.      Edible Flexi Clay has a stable shelf life for 14 months from date of manufacture but will remain perfectly useable for months.

5.      You can condition Edible Flexi clay with white shortening or vegetable fat. I use coconut oil or Stork white margarine. Use a little cornflour in a dusting pouch to roll out your Flexi Clay. You can roll out Flexi Clay super thin if desired. The Flexi Clay will still have structural integrity and superior strength.

6.      If the Edible Flexi Clay becomes a little dry, simply dip the paste in water to add a little moisture back in. The clay may be put into a plastic zip lock bag and microwaved for 5 – 10 seconds.  If clay has become dry, add clay, and water to a zip lock bag and leave for 48 hours. Microwave for 5 – 10 seconds.

7.      Drying time depends on size, thickness and ambient temperature and humidity.  Petals can be assembled an hour or so after being made due to the unique properties of Flexi Clay.

8.      Flexi Clay was designed to work in any climate condition including high humidity areas, as it is starched based. It is not as hydroscopic, so will not collapse like normal flower and gum paste.
